Preserving the FFXI client should be on the back of our minds now. The idea was getting tossed around by CipherX when I just came onto DSP a few years back, but now we kinda need to bring it up again.. +1 for this. I'd be super excited to see an open source client come with a focus on connecting in...

Random thought to hijack this thread but would it be of value for someone to run a private server locked to an expansion and therefore lock the client program to that version? You could then of course build an installer for your client within windows as a separate application and remove the project...

how about a raspberry pi cluster? You can also overclock a raspberry pi, but you should probably buy the heat-sinks for it if you do overclock. You still hit the ARM compilation issues. For a small footprint server maybe an Intel NUC would be a better choice given the requirements posted in the thread so far.
