ok, installed an ubuntu VM and figured it out: it's pkg-config missing from the guide (and autoconf), i'll add both of those

No problem. You know I know how to set up a server, but...this is different, trying to do it with Linux...
More difficult. Especially since I have very limited Linux experience...
Basically, I am trying to figure out how to set up a portable VDI that can be shared with others if they want a basic server up and ready to go. Then they will just need to do client side stuff.
Got part of it done, but I also want to try to do more with it. Like automated updating, but that may be tougher, since I am still a linux noob...
