Counter forces a crash

Post by hakusho » Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:42 am

Something weird started happening today.
I was leveling MNK from 30-50 yesterday without any crashes. I countered numerous times without any hiccups (besides the fact that the animation is wrong and the chat log says something about Skillchain: Scission - CharName is healed for 0 hp). Before I logged out I spawned some new gear into my inventory because I just dinged 50.
I added Cross-Counters, Aikido Koshita, Junkenshi Habaki and Storm Loop to my equipment.
Then I logged in this morning and the game crashed (just the client, not the server) within the first 10 seconds of a fight. At first I didn't realize what caused it but after a few crashes I saw that it happend just as the counter message popped up in the chat box.
I thought it might be one of the new items that caused the issue but I unequipped the new gear and removed it from my inventory but the crashes still happened.
The only other thing that changed when I hit 50 was the fact that I got Double Attack from my WAR sub but I removed that from the traits SQL table and Counter still crashed the game.
My brother also crashed when he was in a party with me standing next to me. He did not crash while being in a different zone.

I did not update the server since I last logged out when everything was working and I did not change anything on my PC. I logged out, shut down my PC yesterday, booted it up, started the server, logged in and the game startet crashing.
Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? It's kind of hard to avoid good gear that has Counter +X.

I'm currently running r2129 and I've already dropped and recreated the traits SQL table with no effect.
The last entry in the Game Server window is;
Client performing action 02
Is there any way I can provide advanced debug information from the crashes?

The eventlog shows the following:

Did you update client to december 2012? If so that might be it.

That was what popped into my mind at first but the client doesn't update itself just by running mXI, right? I'd have to manually run the official POL application and willingly accept to download and install the update. If that is the case, then no, I did not update the client. If there is some background updating in place that is also triggered by just running mXI, then I'm not sure.

yes if you didnt use the official pol veiwer and perform the file damage repair then your client should still be good^^

Ill try copy your situation later and see if i can produce crash.

I think I've narrowed it down. My brother was next to me fighting another monster and was looking away from me when it happened again. I think it has something to do with the Counter animation, which currently just displays a small shadow cloud. Not sure if it's reproduceable but it crashed my brother's game, too when he was facing my way and he has a completely different graphics card. SSince I haven't installed any new drivers or Windows Updates I'd like to think that it is nothing specific to my PC.

Yeah, like I said, dropping the newly spawned gear didn't help. I'm really confused. I can't think of anything that could have caused this...
